![]() ![]() The visualisation below shows you the resemblance with LatAm (average of EU countries) per month, ranging from January 2017 until April 2018. I also wanted to know if there would be a difference per month, given that Latin music often gets associated with the Summer. From there on we can calculate the resemblance percentage of all unique tracks from the LatAm benchmark. We can do this by looking at the tracks that appeared both in Spotify’s Top 200 in the LatAm regions and in Europe. Taking the LatAm benchmark in consideration, I wanted to know what the resemblance would be with the European countries. Top 3 artists based on amount of distinct tracks Resemblance with Europe J Balvin and Maluma also rank high in most countries The only country where he doesn’t rank first is Brazil, where we see a rather different top three compared to the other LatAm countries. Ozuna manages to get the most tracks into the Top 50. A visualisation below shows the top three artists per country, based on the amount of distinct tracks that entered Spotify’s Top 50 chart. Unfortunately Puerto Rico and Venezuela don’t have their own daily Spotify chart.īefore we start to make the comparison with Europe I wanted to start off by getting a better understanding of the ‘home’ of Latin music. I’ve decided to keep these countries as a benchmark for the LatAm region when comparing with Europe. The largest suppliers are Puerto Rico, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Brazil and Venezuela. By looking at the two largest Latin playlists on Spotify (Viva Latino and Baila Reggaeton), and their featured music, I was able to retrieve the LatAm countries that are the largest supplier of Latin music that fits Spotify’s playlist (done via Chartmetric). The data set contains all Spotify daily charts ranging from January 2017 until May 20th 2018, collected via.Knowing that Latin music is able to reach a stunning amount of Spotify listeners I wondered if we can figure out how Latin music manages to reach us in Europe, and if this differs per country or artist. With massive international playlists like Viva Latino and Baila Reggaeton (respectively 8+ and 7+ million followers) and mainstream pop playlists featuring Latin repertoire, the potential global audience becomes immense - resulting into the consumer frequently being exposed to the sound of LatAm. In this streaming era the sound of Latin pop and Reggaeton seems to reach us more easily than before. Not to mention that they manage to reach high chart positions all over Europe. Immense hits like Nicky Jam’s “X” and Daddy Yankee’s “Dura” are accumulating millions of streams outside of their home country. ![]() It wasn’t until I consulted Genius this morning that I became familiar with the meaning of some of Daddy Yankee’s lyrics, meanwhile I was already mumbling along for weeks now. It’s fair to say that a lot of us are singing along with today’s largest Latin and Reggaeton hits, without necessarily understanding what we’re saying or hearing. Ozuna - 18 million monthly listeners on Spotify ![]()
